I’ve been a long time fan of Hillsong. I’ve been a fan since I was like.. able to talk. I think Hillsong’s music has revolutionized Christian music, not only as praise & worship type of songs, but more contemporary. They were our go to church for music. I’ve been performing their songs for as long as I can remember. A Hillsong album was a household item in my place. We had it playing on the radio, we had the vhs on concert (later on they were DVDs), and probably every album up until 2004. Since then, I’ve just been discovering what types of music their Youth group, Hillsong United has been up to.
Hillsong United do not disappoint. They really reach out to their target audience, and I find it so inspiring that they do so. They’re able to reach out to people with their music, and to allow God to work through them. I’m not going to get all religious here, but I’m just really blessed.
With all of that being said, Hillsong United recently put out a new album called “Zion”. I am absolutely amazed with their new stuff. Last year’s live album was a step up from their usual sound, but this year they really pushed it. This new sound is more driven towards an alternative/indie rock sound. Everyone who knows me, knows that this is my favourite genre. I guess that’s why I’m absolutely in love with this album. As usual, their songwriting is very impressive, and very powerful. I think by going with this kind of sound, they were pushing themselves to reach out to a wider audience. That goal will definitely be achieved, and I’m looking forward to seeing them work through God to reach a new audience. I’d like to perform some of their songs in the near future.
Here’s the most popular song off of the new album : Oceans (Where My Feet Fall)
The lyrics are uplifting, and the vocals and the music that accompany the lyrics polish the song. It’s a beautiful song. Whether you’re a Christian or not, there’s no denying that this song is a great one. I’d check out Relentless and Up In Arms if you liked that… or even better, just get their whole album. 🙂
